Earlier this year, my husband and I were able to cross off Italy from our bucket list! It was such a special trip and we explored some incredible cities. We visited Rome first, if you missed the recap, click here. After Rome we hopped on the train and made our way up to Florence. What a gorgeous city! I'd highly recommend adding this place to your list. Here's everything you need to do and see, where to eat and the best place to stay!
WHAT TO DO
things to see
As I said in our Rome recap, the best part of Italy was just slowing down and taking it all in. Don't be in a hurry to get anywhere, and allow yourself the time to relax and soak it all up. There are so many wonderful places to explore in Florence. Here is a list of some of the must-see places that we put together, and my brother contributed as well. Plus, there's a few recommendations from the ever so helpfulSavy Backpacker.
WHERE TO EAT
If you have a gluten allergy or celiac, like I do, I highly recommend downloading the free app, AIC (Associazione Italiana Celiachia). It allows you to easily search for restaurants in the area that have trained their staff on how to prepare food for those with the allergy or disease. It was so helpful and every place we went to was absolutely scrumptious!
Also note, if you get your food or drinks to go, or stand at the bar, they won't charge you a cover charge. If you sit down, you'll be charged a couple Euros as a service charge.
Here's a list of the places we ate and what we ordered:
WHAT TO WEAR
We were in Florence in the middle of April and it was still quite chilly so, if you are going around the same time, I would recommend a lot of layers! I would highly suggest traveling to this area when it's "low season" and not jam packed with tourist. The trade off, the weather is not perfect for those cute flowy dresses and sandals you see in Instagram photos, but not having to fight the crowds is a trade I'd take.
I basically lived in this outfit. This sweatshirt is from Old Navy, it has pockets, thumb holes and is very lightweight. Plus, I would 10/10 recommend these Orthopedic Adidas because you will be doing a lot of walking. Click here for this look.
